* An ongoing debate between Alan Beck and Ben Ritchey rages on ... AB> Also, I went to C:\Golded to initiate AB> Gedwin -install and it returned "Could not find any supported AB> software, try another path" It's been so long since I ran it {chuckle} but maybe try specifying the path to D'Bridge as in: gedwin -install=DBPath (specify DB home path for "DBPath" >> -INSTALL[=path] Start the quick install procedure. Look in path, if >> given. Note: ______________________________________________________________________ GoldED 2.50 - Installation Instructions ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ QUICK INSTALL FOR FIRST-TIME USERS GoldED contains an ultra-simple install feature. It will try to detect what other mail software you have installed, and will automatically build a simple configuration file from what it finds. If the auto-detect is successful, you don't have to write a single line of configuration to get started with GoldED! First, create a directory (for example C:\MAIL\GOLDED) and unpack the distribution archive(s) to the directory. If you have one of the programs listed below, GoldED can auto-detect and use their configurations: D'Bridge, Dutchie, Ezycom, FastEcho, FidoPCB, FMail, FrontDoor, GEcho, IMAIL, InterMail, LoraBBS, Maximus, ME2, Opus, PCBoard, Portal, ProBoard, QFront, QuickBBS, RaEcho, RemoteAccess, Squish, SuperBBS, timEd, Terminate (TMAIL), TosScan, WMail, XMail. Stand-alone AREAS.BBS files are also supported. Note that some versions of these programs may not be supported because they are very old or very new. Also, some program support have only been implemented very recently and may be untested or may not have been tested in a real-life setup. If you have one or more of these programs installed, run GoldED with parameter /INSTALL. When detecting programs, GoldED will search environment variables and the current directory for signs of the programs. If this fails, try adding a path to the program you want GoldED to find, like this: /INSTALL=<path>. GoldED will, as a minimum, try to get the first defined username and address, an originline and any mail area it can find. If any of it was not found after completed detection, GoldED will prompt you for the missing information. After completed detection and/or prompting, GoldED will create a GOLDED.CFG file containing the information it found and then start. You can use this simple configuration file as a starting point and add to it when you start exploring the more advanced features. This is an example of a very simple install: === Cut === USERNAME Odinn Sorensen ADDRESS 2:236/77.1 AREADEF NETMAIL "Netmails" 0 Net Opus C:\MAIL\NETMAIL\ AREAFILE AreasBBS C:\MAIL\AREAS.BBS === Cut === The absolute minimum that GoldED must have to start, is a USERNAME, an ADDRESS and at least one mail area, defined using AREA, AREADEF or AREAFILE. If the username and address can be found in another programs configuration, an AREAFILE is all that is needed. ______________________________________________________________________ QUICK INSTALL FOR USERS UPGRADING FROM A PREVIOUS VERSION You should be able to drop-in the new *.EXE files (and the new GOLDHELP.CFG file) to replace your old files and get going right away. Don't forget to keep a backup of your old *.EXE and *.CFG files, in case you are not satisfied or there are problems with this beta. It must be noted that although this release has been in beta for years, there have been many recent changes that have not been extensively tested with all possible configurations and combinations of options. Bugs may have been introduced that could cause an existing configuration to fail in mysterious and frustrating ways, with lockups, crashes, exception errors etc. If you have problems using this beta with your existing configuration, please try to install it in a separate directory using the simple install procedure described above for first-time users. If you use a GOLDED environment variable, don't forget to remove it or change the path! If the problems go away when using the simple configuration, please try to determine which part or parts of your existing configuration that is causing problems. Comment out keywords one by one until the problem goes away, or add keywords to the simple install from your existing configuration until it fails. If lockups or crashes occur before the startup screen comes up, try to run GoldED with parameters -FF -VV and note how far it gets when processing your configuration. Please report your findings in the GoldED support or beta echoes or direct to the author. ______________________________________________________________________ === Cut === .- Keep the faith, --------------------------------------------------. | | | Ben aka cMech Web: http|ftpinkp|telnet|ssh://cmech.dynip.com | | | | vvvvvv Email: fido4cmechSPAM(at)lusfiberBLOCK.net | | { O O } Home page: http://cmech.dynip.com/homepage/ | | __m___oo___m__ | `--| | | |-- -------------------------------------------------' ...
