Once SourceForge started bundling malware with their binaries a couple of years
 ago I felt it was Game Over for them.

GitHub feels well-run in comparison, and also well-funded. It's also a lot
simpler to use, once you get over the initial hump of switching from CVS or
Subversion to Git for version control.

I notice Apple, Microsoft and IBM are using it. That's a decent endorsement.

And while not an ideal outcome, Google shut down their Google Code service
because of how successful GitHub was.

GitHub would use a content distribution network internally.

AFAIK SourceForge never had any mirrors in or near Australia so that point is a
 bit academic from where I sit.
