Well there is this:

#define MAX_AREAS   8000

Which I could just up to whatever. 

But I will have to look a bit closer where it's used in what ways, and what the
 concequences for memory usage are. And if possible I would like to make it a
configuration option, so that it wouldn't use the extra resources for people
that don't need it. 

Are you sure you want to use FMail for this? It wasn't really designed to
handle usenet...
