When I was in basic training in the US Army many years ago, I would volunteer 
for nightwatch (or firewatch).  It was a two-hour stint overnight that was 
basically a beginner's version of CQ*.  One night, I was pulling a double with 
the drill sergeant's permission.  He snuck in at 0300 and walked around 
silently.  Jerking off is a no-no in the Army--yes, I'm serious--and he caught 
someone doing just that in their bed.  He whacked the guy in the head with his 
flashlight and yelled, "Listen dummy, switch hands, it feels like someone else 
is doing it!" The poor recruit about died of fright but I will never forget 
those words.

*=Charge of Quarters.  In the Army, this was a 24-hour guard duty shift both 
at the battery building and at barracks on post.  If there was an emergency or 
if we suddenly got called to war, these guys were the ones that would muster 
everyone.  I used to pull CQ a lot but that's because some guys paid me up to 
$300 a pop to pull their shift for them.
