Well, worst fears happened. Update on fried equipment.... Dell PowerEdge server Canon ImageClass laser printer HP OfficeJet printer US Robotics Courier dialup modem So far the tab is $1,775. I work on the Bose system this afternoon.... I am not a happy camper. Such an eventful Thursday!! Power company here (JCP&L) has some outside contractors replacing the underground feed wires in the entire area. Yesterday was my time. Now, there are 15,000 homes in my complex and guess what, while digging a trench for the new conduit, they hit the old feeder cable! Well, a huge boom was then heard along with a few other smaller ones. Power goes off. I run outside and they say there's smoke coming out of the back of the house!! Run around back and the junction box for cable and telephone lines are smoking away! Fire department gets called. (4 trucks) They're running through the house, under the house (crawl space), one fireman gets a shock now EMS gets called. Power company then sends two lineman trucks and gas company sends a serviceman (even though I only use NG for home heating). He does a field trip with his meter sniffing out possible leaks including underground! (Found none). Next comes JCP&L's supervisor, who was extremely helpful! Being a fireman was injured, the county prosecutor's office was called along with fire arson rep and county electrical inspector. (I offered to fire up the grill and have a bbq!) I grab a lawn chair where Dakota and I took a seat on the front lawn. I get asked a ton of questions by all of them. The electrical inspector says until I get the interior check for any issues by a licensed electrician, the house in uninhabitable. Just peachy!! Finally, the supervisor for the contractors comes, apologizes and says he has everything covered including an electrician about 20 minutes out. (I kinda dropped that idea in the JCP&L's rep regarding the contractors get an electrician.) So, electrical inspector says he has to go and when he gets the all clear he'll lift the ban. (I was foreseeing three ays in a hotel) Electrician takes care of all the tests and issues, the inspector is called and COMES BACK!! Everything passed and got my house back!! JCP&L worked through most of the day, finished the new installation and I had power back at 9pm last night! Now the bad part. I'm going over all the sensitive electrical components. So far, I lost the cable modem, three surge protectors and possibly my Bose entertainment system (still checking that). I still have to dig into my main house server but that's buried so I'll get to that later. My laptop, and three Raspberry Pi's are still operating. I've ordered the modem and surge protectors and should be here Sunday. Comcast has my repair order for Sunday as well so hopefully IÆll be back in business regarding the internet by then. At least the fire department was gentle. No holes in the roof or any walls. No water used so thank God. Now it's just a wait game, get the new equipment and fill out some claim forms. Things could have been much worse. I feel bad for the fireman who was injured but the entire experience renewed my faith in dealing with utilities and county officials. They certainly kicked it up a notch for me and I give them high kudos!! --- D'Bridge 3.99 SR33 * Origin: A man's most proud moment is when he takes a shit (2:292/854) |
