Astronomy Picture of the Day Astronomy Picture of the Day Discover the cosmos! [1] Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2019 May 12 [2] Ash and Lightning above an Icelandic Volcano Image Credit & Copyright: Sigur≡ur Stefnisson [3] Explanation: Why did a picturesque volcanic eruption [4] in Iceland create so much ash? Although the large ash [5] plume was not unparalleled in its abundance, its location was particularly noticeable [6] because it drifted across [7] such well-populated areas. The Eyjafjallajökull [8] volcano in southern Iceland began erupting [9] on 2010 March 20, with a second eruption [10] starting under the center of a small glacier on 2010 April 14. Neither eruption was unusually powerful [11] . The second eruption, however, melted a large amount of glacial ice [12] which then cooled and fragmented lava [13] into gritty glass particles that were carried up with the rising volcanic [14] plume. Pictured here [15] during the second eruption, lightning bolts [16] illuminate ash pouring out [17] of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano [18] .
