APOD: 2019 April 16 - In the Vicinity of the Cone Nebula

                         Astronomy Picture of the Day

Discover the cosmos! [1] Each day a different image or photograph of our
fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a
                           professional astronomer.

Explanation: Strange shapes and textures can be found in neighborhood of the
Cone Nebula [5] . The unusual shapes [6] originate from fine interstellar dust
[7] reacting in complex ways with the energetic light and hot gas being
expelled by the young stars. The brightest star on the right of the featured
picture [8] is S Mon [9] , while the region just below it has been nicknamed
the Fox Fur Nebula [10] for its color and structure. The blue glow [11]
directly surrounding S Mon [12] results from reflection [13] , where
neighboring dust reflects light from the bright star. The red glow [14] that
encompasses the whole region results not only from dust reflection but also
emission [15] from hydrogen [16] gas ionized [17] by starlight. S Mon [18]
is part of a young open cluster of stars [19] named NGC 2264 [20] , located
about 2500 light years [21] away toward the constellation [22] of the Unicorn
( Monoceros [23] ). Even though it points right at S Mon, details of the
origin of the mysterious geometric Cone Nebula [24] , visible on the far left,
remain a mystery [25] .
