Astronomy Picture of the Day Astronomy Picture of the Day Discover the cosmos! [1] Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2019 April 3 [2] Wisps Surrounding the Horsehead Nebula Image Credit & Copyright: Mario Zauner [3] Explanation: The famous Horsehead Nebula in Orion is not alone. A deep exposure shows that the dark familiar shaped [4] indentation, visible just below center, is part of a vast complex [5] of absorbing dust [6] and glowing gas [7] . To bring out details of the Horse [8] head's pasture, an amateur astronomer used a backyard telescope in Austria [9] to accumulate and artistically combine 7.5 hours of images in the light of Hydrogen [10] (red), Oxygen [11] (green), and Sulfur [12] (blue). The resulting spectacular picture [13] details an intricate tapestry of gaseous wisps [14] and dust-laden filaments [15] that were created and sculpted [16] over eons by stellar winds [17] and ancient supernovas [18] . The Flame Nebula [19] is visible just to the left of the Horsehead, while the bright star on the upper left is Alnilam [20] , the central star in Orion's Belt [21] . The Horsehead Nebula [22] lies 1,500 light years [23] distant towards the constellation [24] of Orion [25] .
