Astronomy Picture of the Day Astronomy Picture of the Day Discover the cosmos! [1] Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2019 February 10 [2] Venus Unveiled Image Credit: Venus (left): NASA [3] , JPL [4] , Magellan Project [5] ; Earth (right): NASA [6] , Apollo 17 [7] Explanation: What does Venus [8] look like beneath its thick clouds? These clouds [9] keep the planet's surface hidden from even the powerful telescopic eyes of Earth-bound astronomers. In the early 1990s, though, using imaging radar, NASA's Venus-orbiting Magellan spacecraft [10] was able to lift the veil [11] from the face of Venus [12] and produced spectacular high resolution image [13] s of the planet's surface. Colors used in this computer generated picture of Magellan [14] radar data are based on color image [15] s from the surface of Venus transmitted by the Soviet [16] Venera [17] 13 and 14 landers. The bright area running roughly across the middle represents the largest highland region of Venus known as Aphrodite Terra [18] . Venus, on the left, is about the same size [19] as our Earth [20] , shown to the right for comparison.
