Astronomy Picture of the Day Astronomy Picture of the Day Discover the cosmos! [1] Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2018 October 22 [2] Apollo 12 Visits Surveyor 3 Image Credit: Apollo 12 [3] Crew, NASA [4] Explanation: Apollo 12 [5] was the second mission to land humans [6] on the Moon [7] . The landing site was picked to be near the location of Surveyor [8] 3, a robot spacecraft that had landed on the Moon [9] three years earlier. In the featured photograph [10] , taken by lunar module pilot Alan Bean [11] , mission commander Pete Conrad [12] jiggles [13] the Surveyor spacecraft to see how firmly it is situated. The lunar module [14] is visible [15] in the distance. Apollo 12 [16] brought back many photographs and moon rocks. Among the milestones achieved by Apollo 12 was the deployment [17] of the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package [18] , which carried out many experiments including one that measured the solar wind [19] .
