Astronomy Picture of the Day Astronomy Picture of the Day Discover the cosmos! [1] Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2018 September 25 [2] Highlights of the North Autumn Sky Illustration Credit & Copyright: Universe2go.com Explanation: What can you see [3] in the night sky this season? The featured graphic gives a few highlights for Earth's northern hemisphere. Viewed as a clock face centered at the bottom, early (northern) autumn sky events fan out toward the left, while late autumn events are projected toward the right. Objects relatively close to Earth [4] are illustrated, in general, as nearer to the cartoon figure with the telescope at the bottom center -- although almost everything pictured can be seen without a telescope [5] . As happens during any season, constellations [6] appear the same year to year, and, as usual, the Leonids meteor shower [7] will peak in mid-November. Also as usual, the International Space Station [8] (ISS) can be seen, at times, [9] as a bright spot drifting across the sky [10] after sunset. Planets visible after sunset this autumn include Jupiter and Mars [11] , and during late autumn, Saturn [12] .
