                         Astronomy Picture of the Day

Discover the cosmos! [1] Each day a different image or photograph of our
fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a
                           professional astronomer.

Explanation: If you could stand on Mars -- what might you see? If you were
NASA's Curiosity rover [5] , just last month you would have seen the view from
Vera Rubin Ridge [6] , an intriguing rock-strewn perch [7] on the side of
Mount Sharp [8] . In the featured 360-degree panorama [9] , you can spin
around and take in the vista [10] from all directions, in many browsers, just
by pointing or tilting [11] . In this virtual reality [12] view, many
instruments on the rover [13] are labelled, including antennas, the robotic
arm, and the radioisotope thermoelectric generator [14] (RTG). Dark sand and
light rock cover the ground nearby in a mixture called lakebed mudstone.
Towering Mount Sharp [15] is only barely visible in the distance due to
airborne dust from a planet-wide storm [16] just winding down. Among its many
discoveries [17] , Curiosity has found that the raw ingredients for life [18]
are present on Mars. Next on Mars [19] will be NASA's Insight [20] , on
target to land [21] in late November, which is scheduled to deploy a
seismometer [22] to better study the interior of the red planet [23] .
