Astronomy Picture of the Day Astronomy Picture of the Day Discover the cosmos! [1] Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2018 August 21 [2] Glowing Elements in the Soul Nebula Image Credit & Copyright: Jes·s M.Vargas & Maritxu Poyal [3] Explanation: Stars are forming in the Soul of the Queen of Aethopia. More specifically, a large star forming region called the Soul Nebula [4] (IC 1898) can be found in the direction of the constellation Cassiopeia [5] , who Greek mythology credits as the vain wife [6] of a King who long ago ruled lands [7] surrounding the upper Nile [8] river. The Soul Nebula [9] houses several open clusters of stars [10] , a large radio source known as W5 [11] , and huge evacuated bubbles formed by the winds of young massive stars [12] . Located about 6,500 light years away, the Soul Nebula [13] spans about 100 light years [14] and is usually imaged next to [15] its celestial neighbor the Heart Nebula [16] (IC 1805). The featured image [17] is a composite of three exposures in different colors: red as emitted by hydrogen [18] gas, yellow as emitted by sulfur [19] , and blue as emitted by oxygen [20] .
