                         Astronomy Picture of the Day

Discover the cosmos! [1] Each day a different image or photograph of our
fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a
                           professional astronomer.

Explanation: What's that green streak in front of the Andromeda galaxy? A
meteor. While photographing the Andromeda galaxy [4] in 2016, near the peak
of the Perseid [5] Meteor [6] Shower [7] , a sand-sized rock from deep space
crossed right in front [8] of our Milky Way Galaxy [9] 's far-distant
companion. The small meteor [10] took only a fraction of a second to pass
through this 10-degree field. The meteor flared [11] several times while
braking violently upon entering Earth's atmosphere [12] . The green color [13]
was created, at least in part, by the meteor's gas glowing as it vaporized.
Although the exposure [14] was timed to catch a Perseids meteor [15] , the
orientation of the imaged streak seems a better match to a meteor from the
Southern Delta Aquariids [16] , a meteor shower [17] that peaked a few weeks
earlier. Not coincidentally, the Perseid Meteor Shower [18] peaks again
tonight [19] .
