C has already died. It is too obsolete to be in use. C++ has replaced it.

The matter IMHO is that the assignment operator "=" is the most frequent
operator in C++. So it is was a sound idea to make it so short.
Besides, ":=b" looks like a fidonet smiley with the tongue out of the mouth.
