It could be rephrased as, "She couldn't imagine how they're being there would
be an awkward consequence."  I don't know enough of the context really, to
determine whether it might be a physical or relationship-related situational
question.  But I'm thinking they're just 'good company' to have around, and
ordinarily well-behaved.
