"A" is the arcticle for "room," I see. But it is really weird for me
when I see no "of" after "combination."

I dare suppose, that it must be "combined" instead of "combination":

Rephrased_3, 'Two doors led off the main room, which served as _a_
combined kitchen and living room.'

or

Rephrased_4, 'Two doors led off the main room, which served as _a_
kitchen and living room combined.'
