Hi, Alexander! Recently you wrote in a message to Pietro Bisanti: PB> Is there anybody who can help me out with the English tongue? PB> Thanks! ak> Did you put "tongue" instead of "language" on purpose? ak> I doubt that a man who speaks "help out" hasn't heard about ak> the English language. I used "language" as the more common alternative, but my GAGE CANADIAN DICTIONARY equates "tongue" and "language" in definition #5. Another example of this usage is the scene from MY FAIR LADY (based on Shaw's PYGMALION) in which Henry Higgins says about Eliza & her Cockney accent: ... She should be taken out and hung For the cold-blooded murder of the English tongue. OTOH I was taught to say "hanged" with reference to a human being... [chuckle]. --- timEd/386 1.10.y2k+ * Origin: Wits' End, Vancouver CANADA (1:153/716) |
