That's the type I use as well, ie. gel cell batteries.

Of course, because the charging circuit was intended to refresh only
the original A/h capacity.

You always have to consider that the current drawn at 12V is tenfold the
current drawn from the (115V) AC mains, and therefore the wire has to be
thick enough to carry that current, and not to drop the voltage.

My entire ham radio station is powered from a 12V battery with backup
from a 20A constant voltage power supply. The 20A rating is there to
handle the peak currents, when running the transceiver at full power.

In this way, I don't have to buy separate mains power supplies to every
set, and emergency power is constantly available.

I also own a 500 Watt PA that was only powered from the mains but the
tubes have gone soft, so it's now resting in a cupboard. I'm afraid to
order the tubes because the weight of the graphite anodes may destroy
them in transit.
