Valid 312019Z - 312115Z The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 547 continues. SUMMARY...Strong to severe storms capable mainly of damaging winds will continue across the watch area. A downstream watch may be needed across parts of central and eastern VA. DISCUSSION...Clusters and line segments have sporadically produced severe reports this afternoon. Most notably, a 64 kt (74 mph) gust at Boston Logan International Airport. Additional isolated hail reports also have been noted, along with wind speeds generally in the 35-45 kt range bring reported across the region. Much of the convection from near Philadelphia to NYC to Boston has produced pronounced outflow. This should lead to poorer low level lapse rates and wind potential should decrease behind these clusters of storms as they either weaken or move northeast offshore. In the short-term, a few strong gusts are still possible with the strongest cells. Further south, Convection has struggled to move off of higher terrain from the WV Panhandle into northern VA and the Washington D.C. area where early cloud cover has persisted into the afternoon, resulting in an area of cooler temperatures and weaker instability. South of this area however, a line of storms tracking toward Charlottesville VA has become better organized and will encounter a moderately unstable boundary layer with very steep low level lapse rates. This area may need to be addressed by an additional watch issuance downstream of WW 547. ..Leitman.. 07/31/2019 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product...
