 Viewing through the web interface seems to mark messages as "read", but the
minute I went back and re-read them with DDMsgReader, the header information
went away.

I've now disabled DDMsgReader completely on my board, When the next message
comes in addressed to me, I'll see if it happens with the stock Synchronet
reader.
