DM had a very good point earlier.  You're going about this backwards.  Wait
until you have your BBS set
up, look for prompts, etc. that you would like to change, then alter them. 
When you're in a position to
do it that way, it'll be more obvious to you what happens when, say, \r\n is
removed, or when you dick
around with CTRL-A codes.

In the meantime, maybe draw some graphics or something that is more doable
without a working BBS to test
it against.

It's great that you're enthusiastic about setting up your system, but a lot of
these questions are
self-answering once you're in a position to poke around at stuff.
