At the very least it's How embarrassing that would be for all of us. Maybe you should leave actions like that up to DM? Hu> disrespecful to use a pre-exisiting name. Years ago I tried to register a The one in Buffalo is just one of many Synchronets. They were founded in 1998. It's entirely possible that at the time, they could not as quickly or easily find out that "Synchronet" was in use elsewhere or belonged to a (by then defunct?) company in California. Even if they knew it was the name of a BBS package, they might have felt it sufficiently different from their area of business that there should be no confusion. Next up you've got SynchroNet of synchronet.com, and I guarantee you that they don't give a shit about some open source BBS package already having the name. Or they might care enough to tell *us* to stop using it. Of course there's also http://synchronet.co/, purveyors of fine shipping container solutions. Or this networking company: http://www.synchronet.org/ Or this supply chain thing: https://www.synchronet.eu/ I wonder if all of these groups are mad at each other for poaching the name. Hu> business name for tax purposes and because it was similar to an existing Hu> business I was asked not to use it. I have no idea what the "rules" are on Hu> the world wide web. Thanks for your reply. The web and the internet at large are not a wild west, and activities there are generally subject to the same rules as anywhere else. Consider if your attempt to use that name hadn't been rejected, you'd had letterhead, business cards, signage printed up, bought a domain, built up some recognition, and maybe been in business for 20+ years. Then some guy comes along and tells you that you should change your company name because it overlaps with something in their esoteric hobby. Your reaction would be, what, "Okay, no problem, I'll change my company's name"? --- echicken electronic chicken bbs - bbs.electronicchicken.com ■ Synchronet ■ electronic chicken bbs - bbs.electronicchicken.com * Origin: Vertrauen - [vert/cvs/bbs].synchro.net (1:103/705) |
