On 2017 Aug 08 10:11:30, you wrote to Roger Nelson: RN>> I understand what you mean, but I think I would have been a natural RN>> at it even with a surname like mine. I do favor the sea, however, RN>> over flight. JD> Do you have Flight Simulator? If you like flying, that is a great program yeah, if you like games and unrealistic physics... if one is really into flying, one should take a look at the FlightGear simulator... it is FOSS and has been in development for 20(+) years... the original goal was much better graphics than the other so-called simulators had... it has done a good job but since it is FOSS and everyone is a volunteer of their time to the development, some things still need more work... right now the scenery is being worked on to try to come up with a way of releasing updated portions as they are needed... the last time they ran the scenery generation stuff, it took several months and any problems required starting the generation all over again... this is because each tile needs information from those ajoining it... at this time, the entire world consists of 1818439 files in 50776 directories consuming a mere 88.6 GiB (95134950761 bytes) of drive space yeah, i just ran a properties check on my scenery directory that contains the official scenery that's distributed by FGFS... i happen to have the entire world scenery downloaded but the simulator offers on-the-fly downloading of scenery so you can get only that which you fly over... one can also have custom scenery for some areas if they desire... my custom scenery directory is only 2GiB and contains mostly override stuff for some airports... things like accurate tower positions, ground nets for the AI craft to follow, and even procedures files for the SIDs and STARs... much is 3D stuff developed by numerous individuals and they're also working on pulling data from the OSM (OpenStreet Maps) project and placing those in the scene with accurate coordinates... unlike m$FS, you can actually see true-to-life scenery when flying from, for example, Meigs to KLAX instead of some artificial muck with no mountains or rivers... i even flew by Niagra Falls, just a little while ago O the craft? oh wow, the craft! there's currently two craft distributed with the simulator... the first (aka main default) craft is a highly detailed Cessna c172p with realistic startup, damage and capabilities... you can definitely break the landing gear and wings on this bird! the second one is a UFO which is used more for scenery object placement than flying but it is fun to fly as it has some really futuristic physics... there's 526 craft families available to download from the official FGFS distribution hanger... of those, many, like the 737NG, have numerous variants... the 737NG directory shows four or five variants... some variants are simply modified versions that have longer ranges needed for longer flights... some are cargo craft... some are for a FO (First Officer) or CP (Co-Pilot) so that two people can fly a craft together over the MP (Multi-Player) network... there's fighter jets, some with an ability to fire weaponry, and helicopters... there's also some ships that you can control for military operations (eg: carrier ops) and SAR missions... one of the guys has been working with the Erickson S64E AirCrane to get hoisting, carrying and dropping of cargo boxes as well as fire fighting water loading and dropping... there's even numerous gliders and lighter-than-air craft like dirigibles and hot air balloons that one can fly... some of the guys also have developed motorcycles and wheeled vehicles to drive around... there's even a highly detailed and operational space shuttle! see the end of this post for the complete list of craft directories avaiable from the FGAddon Hanger... you do need a decent machine with at least 8Gig of RAM... more is better, though... i regularly see my FGFS using 10+Gig of RAM... you also need a decent video card to get decent frame rates... 10FPS is ok but more is definitely better... i started with an inexpensive $30US NVIDIA card and stayed away from highly developed areas and craft... some craft, like the Boeings are highly developed in their 3D rendering and can easily bring the sim to a crawl just by loading them... i upgrades some months later to a $60US NVIDIA card and jumped to ~30FPS for most things... i'm looking to upgrade my video card again but i'm not sure to what extent i'm going to go... my system is an AMD FX3850 8-core 4Ghz CPU... much better video cards are as much or more than the CPU chip, itself... however, they may have 256 or more GPUs in them... the more GPUs, dedicated video memory and buss speed you have, the better the rendering and frame rate... a lot of folks are using laptops with dual integrated video cards... one for normal stuff and the other is switched to for high graphical operations... Intel video is ok, ATI or whatever it is called these days is better but we've seen the best from NVIDIA's offerings... i guess you can tell what i've been doing in the last year or two ----->8 snip
