Hello Ward, LL>> However, it should be kept in mind that all democracies, including LL>> the USA, have fascist tendencies. WD> The USA is not a democracy ... the Electoral College clearly demonstrates WD> that. There is no basis for saying the US is somehow "not a democracy, but a republic" - which is what you are suggesting. The US is not a direct democracy, but a representative democracy, which is a form of democracy. Even Thomas Jefferson interchangeably used the terms "democracy" and "republic" as meaning the same thing, in context with what he was writing about. A "democracy", both then (at the time of the Framers of the Constitution) and now, has been generally understood to include representative democracy, as well as direct democracy. Representative democracy is the only demmocracy that is around at the state or national level. Would it have made you happier had I referred to the US as being a "representative democracy constitutional republic"? Do keep in mind my original statement - "all democracies, including the USA, have fascist tendencies." That includes not only the USA, but also Belgium. --Lee -- I Take A Sheet In The Pool --- MesNews/1.08.05.00-gb * Origin: news://eljaco.se (2:203/2) |
