The point they seem to be missing is that, if Carter had been re-elected,
the hostages probably would have been over there another 4 years.

Reagan had been elected in November, but they were not released until he
took office.  My guess is the deal, no matter when negotiated, would have
fell through if Carter had won.  Anyone-but-Carter won, so they came home.
