NB>> Did your utilities get help from outside the region

MK> I heard around 800 from the mainland, with a few as far away as
 MK> Ontario.

That goes a long way towards getting services up and running quickly,
having plenty of extra help....

MK> Rumour has it that some were calling it a paid vacation although it
MK> escapes me why they would think that given the long hours and the
 MK> conditions.

Maybe they got some extra time to enjoy the area before trekking home...
And maybe working in a new locale might qualify as a busman's
holiday.... ;)

NB>> They did well to get you reconnected speedily

MK> For sure. I am still amazed by it. However I did have to throw away
MK> some food but thank goodness I didn't stock up for Christmas which
 MK> many did.

Good thing... that would have been even more sad...

NB>> the weather won't take it out again any time soon

MK> I am not betting the farm on it. Power outages in these parts at this
MK> time of year are part and parcel of life in this neck of the woods.

Are people investing in generators after this storm....?

MK> Usually no more than 8 hours.

That's more easily survivable... :) Last year, I think it was, we had
an extended power outage throughout our area... we kept our freezers
closed, and barely opened the fridge, and managed not to lose any
food... but we ate out (there were a few restaurants that either had
power or had generators) until power was restored... thankfully we got
ours back just before we were going to need to figure out some alternate
living situation, for ourselves and the cats, as the house was getting
too cold.... Turned out that my sister had a generator, so was able to
keep power at her house... had we known, we might have gone there... :)

... Whatever it was in Italy it will be something else in New York.
