NB>> Knowing the back story can make a difference...

MK> Perhaps, but in this case it was a totally random event given that I
MK> was only there for the chatter and had no expectations for any music
MK> that they were featuring. Thus the line itself is what caught my ear

Have to admit, the line is the sort that would catch your attention...

MK> as they had already stated the song was the theme for "The Sopranos"
MK> and at that time there was no mention of the author or his slant on
MK> the song. If anything I should have been prejudiced against it given
MK> that I have such a low opinion of TV and anything it might have to
MK> portray about New Jersey gangsters which I believe the show is about.

AIS, the theme song doesn't always have much if anything to do with the
TV show... or might be designed to put a different spin on what one
might have thought the show would be...

MK> It was much, much later and on a different show - Same radio station
MK> CBC Radio One - where I heard the interview and the real story behind
 MK> "Woke Up This Morning".

After which you appreciated the song even more.... :)

NB>> wouldn't likely be running that sort of show

MK> Offhand I cannot think of a TV show with a classical music theme.
MK> Many movies but no TV shows. What comes to mind were all the Disney
MK> animations done to symphonic compositions.

And not just Disney, but the other cartoon studios also used classical,
often from opera, musical selections.... But what I was saying was that
my radio station wouldn't usually be running a tribute show to some
group like Alabama 3, unless it was on Saturdays, when non-classical
music shows do happen... like the one currently on, Fascinating Rhythm,
which showcases American Popular Song, using various themes to be
illustrated using songs of ragtime, musicals, tin pan alley, big band,
clubs, etc... Before it was The Score, which uses music from movie
soundtracks, which can run the gambit.... Later tonight will be Echoes,
which is mostly new agey music... My mother used to cite those shows as
proof that her favorite station was NOT classical music 24/7, as the
announcers liked to claim, especially during pledge drives... ;)

NB>> If I have the opportunity present

MK> Understood. In my case it was totally random which is perhaps the
MK> best way. Also having everything going against it and it still made an
MK> impression might also be required to add additional meaning to the
 MK> impression.

I'm sure that it would most likely also be totally random as well... and
most likely when I'm up at our camp, and listening to North Country
Public Radio, which is the only station up there that has any classical
music, but also has all the NPR news and some of their talk shows, along
with a wide variety of music genres featured in various shows...
