We still have our landline... and it still is my primary phone... the
cell is for when I'm not home and wish to have communication away from
home... I do ok with the small display and the little keys, though...

Yup... and my son uses his as a portable computer, which just happens to
have phone service as part of it....

If your neighbors kicked in for the costs to fix things to keep their
less expensive service going, you'd be willing to work on things,
