I wonder if the connection is dropped because there is no activity on the
connection.  This can happen on both the software and hardware side, so this is
why you see things like "NOOP" in IRC, FTP, telnet, etc, where there may be
long periods of time when no data is transfered between.

(Or maybe you don't see them, because they are designed to be "transparent" to
then end user, but they are there)

I've seen issues where Power settings turn off ethernet when idle on laptops,
and both hardware and software firewalls that kill idle connections after no
activity on a connection after a period of time... all sorts of things.
