> Dark Passage > Action in the North Atlantic > To Have and Have Not To Have and Have Not would be on my list, too. I like those other two also, but they are not my favorites. I would also include: Casablanca The Maltese Falcon The Big Sleep We're No Angels (my favorite Christmas movie) The Petrified Forest Dead Reckoning As for books vs. movies, I really like the movie The Big Sleep, but I also like the book. There were actually two versions of The Big Sleep. The first was filmed before the war ended and was closer to the book. However, the studio wanted to get its war films out before the war ended, so it got shelved. In the meantime, Laren Bacall got a part in a movie with a horrible French actor. It tanked. So, they reshot and replaced several scenes in The Big Sleep to play on the chemistry she had with Bogart. Howard Hawks did not want her career tanking with the bad movie! Sometimes, Turner Classic Movies will play the original version. The book is my favorite and is written by my favorite author, Raymond Chandler. I would say I prefer the story in it a little better, but it is difficult to beat Bogey and Bacall on-screen.
