So... I've been up to the Pond for close to a week, and pecking at
messages when I've had some free time around transporting my kid around
the area until his Jeep was up and running... No internet access up here
at all at the camp, so upload will have to wait until I return home..

What about in that particular case...?

I've not driven in either of those two states, I don't think...

One of these days, I might be driving there... we lived there (in
Crawfordsville) for 2 years when I was a little kid... I'd like to see
if I could find the house we lived in then...

Almost sounds like you should just take the road that your head tells
you not to take....  <G>

That can waste a lot of time... and/or lead to some interesting

That's why I patronize AAA.... Generally I can get a stack of maps
before I leave on a trip, from broad coverage to city maps... and a nice
bag to stash them all in...  For this most recent trip (to Montreal
Airport to pick up the kid and then to our camp), I got a map of the
Northeastern States and Provinces, a map of Canada, a map of Quebec
Province, and a map of Montreal... I'd also have gotten a map of Ontario
Province but they were out of stock, and it was only a couple days
before I was leaving...  As a AAA member, I can stop at any AAA office
anywhere, and get local (and any other) maps for free, too... I got a
good detailed map of Baltimore that way...

I guess I'd noticed that.... but then I tend to use the interstates more
than you, especially for travel inter-state....

That was a bummer... Another good reason to have gotten them beforehand
at AAA....   But there was really no way to have known that they'd be
available later for free....
