  Most all highways have signs reading something like "this road to X in
so many miles".  
  I'll write out more detailed directions on paper, such as when I'm
visiting someone along the way "Take Rt X to such-and-such street, turn L
or R at this or that landmark, go x miles to this place where we will
meet".  Things like that.
  Whenever I give someone directions its along the lines of to stay in
one lane or the other, this of that landmark, go so much farther to this
other one, etc. (These are well marked or highly visible businesses, etc
along the way).  Then when you pass this one place turn x number of
blocks here and there, etc.
  What I'll do is call whomever when I get near to their town for the
more detailed information.
